Infotiv helps develop the energy-efficient laundries of the future

Infotiv enables research into energy efficient washing and drying of laundry in multi-family housing.

The HSB Living Lab is a demo and research arena for multi-family buildings that develops new ways to shape the future of housing. For example, it looks at solutions to optimize energy consumption, how to design building facades in a sustainable way, sharing services for tenants, etc.

Within an HSB Living Lab project, Chalmers has developed an energy monitoring system for the building that continuously keeps track of the total energy consumption. The system is called BEMS (Building Energy Management System).

WMCU makes it possible to choose when the laundry should be finished at the latest.

This system connects with the washing machines to control when it is most energy and cost efficient to wash. The bridging solution between BEMS and the standard washing machines, which come from Electrolux Professional, was developed by Infotiv in 2019-2020. The unit was called the Washing Machine Control Unit (WMCU).

Via WMCU, the tenant selects the time of day when the washing should be completed. Then BEMS starts the washing program by command to WMCU when it is considered most appropriate from an energy and cost point of view.

Now it's the dryers' turn

Now Infotiv has again been entrusted to help Chalmers in their research in HSB Living Lab and this time it is dryers that will be connected in a similar way as the washing machines. A task that has involved fun challenges and new techniques to learn.

When the dryer unit is completed, Chalmers will be able to obtain even more interesting data in their research and learn even more about how to optimize energy consumption in washing and drying in multi-family houses in the future.
